Our artists cover every major style under one roof. Not sure which fits your concept? Book a free consultation and we will steer you right.

01

Black & Grey Realism

Portraits, animals, and photographs in black ink and grey wash, built on smooth gradients and deep contrast. One of the best-aging styles we do.

02

Color Realism

The same photographic detail as black and grey, in a full, saturated palette. The go-to for lifelike florals, wildlife, and vibrant portraits.

03

Surrealism

Realistic technique applied to the impossible: melting, morphing, dreamlike scenes for a personal, symbolic piece that bends reality.

04

Traditional

American old-school: bold black outlines, a tight classic palette, and iconic imagery. Reads clean and holds up better than almost any style.

05

Neo Traditional

Old-school bold lines with a wider palette, richer shading, and illustrative detail. Vivid, ornate, and made to last.

06

New School

Loud, cartoonish, and fun: exaggerated proportions, heavy outlines, and bright color pulled from graffiti, comics, and animation.

07

Japanese (Irezumi)

A centuries-old tradition of bold, symbolic imagery: koi, dragons, and waves composed to flow with the body across sleeves and backs.

08

Blackwork

Bold, saturated solid black, from graphic patterns and abstract shapes to full blackout coverage. A clean way to make a strong statement.

09

Ornamental

Mandalas, geometry, filigree, and jewelry-like detail, using pattern and symmetry to follow and flatter the body's natural lines.

10

Color Anime

Favorite anime and manga characters in vivid, animation-true color, with bold outlines and clean cel-style shading that stays bright.

11

Black & Grey Anime

Anime and manga art in monochrome, from manga-panel pieces to shaded portraits. A subtle, timeless take that ages exceptionally well.

12

Fine Line

Delicate, single-needle linework for minimal, elegant designs: script, small botanicals, and subtle detail. A popular first tattoo.

13

Micro

Tiny, highly detailed miniatures small enough to tuck behind an ear or on a finger, yet packed with precise linework. Discreet and meaningful.

14

Lettering

Names, dates, quotes, and tributes as custom typography, from delicate cursive to bold blackletter. Dialed in by hand to read clean for life.

15

Ignorant

A deliberately raw, doodle-like approach: simple bold lines and a punk, tongue-in-cheek attitude that breaks tattooing's usual rules.

16

Flash & Walk-Ins

Ready-to-go designs drawn ahead of time. Pick a piece off the sheet and get tattooed the same day, no appointment needed.

Turn a Regret Into a Statement

Cover-Ups & Rework

Old ink you have outgrown? We specialize in cover-up tattoos and reworks that turn a regret into something you are proud of. In a cover-up we work with the size, color, and age of your current tattoo, using darker tones, strategic placement, and clever composition to hide the old design inside a new one. Darker and larger generally covers easier than light and small.

An Honest Consultation

We will tell you honestly what is possible, and when a few sessions of laser lightening first would open up better options.

Rework & Refresh

Not every fix is a full cover-up. We also rework and refresh existing tattoos that just need sharper lines or renewed contrast.

A Great Tattoo Is Half Healing

Tattoo Aftercare, Step by Step

Every client leaves with instructions tailored to their piece, but the fundamentals are simple. Following them closely for the first two to three weeks is the single biggest thing you can do for a crisp, long-lasting tattoo.

01

Leave the wrap on. Keep the initial bandage or wrap on as directed by your artist.

02

Wash gently. Clean hands and unscented soap, then pat dry.

03

Moisturize thin. Apply a thin layer of the recommended aftercare product.

04

No soaking. Skip pools, baths, and long swims while healing.

05

Protect it. Keep it out of direct sun, and do not pick or scratch.

06

Repeat. Keep the wash-and-moisturize routine going for the first two to three weeks.

Mild redness, swelling, and tenderness are normal early on. Spreading redness, heat, or unusual discharge are not. If you see those, contact us and see a medical professional. When in doubt, reach out.

Tattoo FAQ

Common questions about getting tattooed at Blackwater Ink, an award-winning studio in Niles, Ohio.

Price depends on size, detail, placement, and how long the piece takes. The best way to get an accurate number is a free consultation.
There is some discomfort. Most people describe it as a hot scratching sensation rather than sharp pain. It varies by placement: bonier areas like ribs and feet tend to be more intense than fleshier ones. Our artists work at a steady pace and are happy to take breaks.
Walk-ins are welcome for piercings and smaller tattoos, especially at our Eastwood Mall studio. For larger or custom pieces we recommend booking a consultation first so your artist can design and prepare.
The surface usually heals in about two to three weeks, while the deeper layers finish settling over the following weeks. Following your aftercare closely during that first stretch keeps the linework crisp and the color solid.
Not right away. Avoid pools, hot tubs, lakes, and long baths until your tattoo is fully healed, usually a couple of weeks, since soaking and bacteria can damage a fresh tattoo. Quick showers are fine.
A cover-up designs a new tattoo to disguise an existing one, using darker tones, smart placement, and composition. What is possible depends on the size, color, and age of the old tattoo. Sometimes a little laser lightening first opens up more options.
Show up rested, hydrated, and fed. Wear comfortable clothing with easy access to the area being tattooed, skip alcohol the night before, and bring a valid photo ID.
